Yes, today is the first day of my ninth year of teaching. It seems like yesterday I had my “last first day” of school.

Note to 17 year old Kat: when your torso is a mile long, low rise is not the move.
I really can’t believe that I’ve been molding minds for almost a decade. We had parent night on Monday night and a mom of one of my students from last year came up to me to chat and said that her son said, “Ms. Stewart made me funny.” Honestly, best compliment of my life. Maybe I should have a career reassessment.

In addition to teaching third graders the art of comedy, I also have a new role this year as “Head of the Fun Committee”. And I’m serious. Still not fully sure what that role entails, but I usually help plan parties and/or events and create nonsense content for our social media. So that’s what I’m sharing today. The latest nonsense that I created to introduce our new faculty members.
May your Ticonderoga #2s be sharp and your milk money be plentiful.

What a great beginning of school video! I loved it!
Forty-eight years ago I taught my first class at Thirtieth Avenue School in Columbus, Georgia…..all 36 of them! What incredible human beings these sixth graders were! Ranging in age from 11-16, these young people had seen more than any adult should have to see, but in spite of their challenges, they were far better students than I was a teacher….and I learned far more from them than they did from me. I love them til this day….Tommy G. killed in Alto Prison over a pair of sneakers, Kenny B. dead of AIDS, Lula F. never said one word at school until she came to my class, Betty B. pregnant at 13, Darren J. finding his own place to stay in the trailer park, and and that’s just the beginning. Almost fifty years later, I wouldn’t take a million bucks for a career that I loved almost every day….and nothing thrills me more than to see the best and the brightest teach!
Haha! Loved the video. I hope you have a great start to your year! 🙂
What a great first day. So awesome that you have been a teacher for this long.
