Today is the first official day of school. I don’t know when, if ever, I have been this excited to start the school year. I am just look for some semblance of normalcy even if I’m looking at that normalcy through a masked face.

I attended a training the last week of July at my school, and the very first day of the training my principal came over to me and said, “Ok, Kat. We have a lot of changes that we are going to need to prepare the students for. Can we make a video of some sort to do that?”
I pride myself in being the Michael Scott of my school. Not in the “makes uncomfortable jokes and has no self awareness way” (I hope). In the “not afraid to make a fool of himself to drive home a point or attempt to make things more fun” way.

Marie, my roommate, had me watch Hamilton on Disney Plus in July. I enjoyed it. I doubt I’ll watch it again on Disney, BUT if the opportunity to see if live ever came around, I’d for sure jump on it. My favorite part? King George. I heard on the Popcast with Knox and Jamie that Lin Manuel Miranda wanted to write a break up song from the King to the colonies. Hugh Laurie gave him the line “You’ll be back” one day when they were at lunch, and he wanted the song to have a Beatles feel because #England. For those reasons, this song is my favorite, so obviously when I needed to do a song to welcome back the students, I changed “You’ll Be Back” to “Welcome Back” but with less spittle.

My bosses loved the idea. Gave me permission to Amazon Prime a king costume. And let me take over the building one morning at 7:30 with a few of my lovely coworkers. God bless these people for indulging my need for lunacy.

Our goal was to communicate with students that they would have to be fully masked, have their temperature taken, and go straight to a hand washing station upon entering the building. This was the end result.
I apologize in advance for the flat notes on the da da das. I had ear buds in blasting Jonathan Groff and had to make sure I wasn’t too loud-not my spiritual gift.
Happy school, friends!

Kat, You are amazing. This is fantastic.
Thank you! And my coworkers who were at work at 7:00 to bring my vision to life are the amazing ones.
