The only person who may enjoy reading this today is our mother, but we are doing it anyway. I always did random questions like these with my students every morning to start our day in a quick, fun way, and they loved it. Maybe it’s because I have the mentality of a 4th grader, but I thought it would be a fun post.
- If you had the world’s attention for 30 seconds, what would you say?
Caroline- Wash your hands. “Please” and “thank you” go a long way. Stop complaining on Facebook about the stomach bug or strep throat you or your child have. (I’m sorry about it, but there are bigger problems in the world, and you’ll be better in 2-3 business days.) You’ll never regret money spent on a trip. Love God. Love others.
Kat- Jesus loves you. Be nice. See the world. No one cares that your child used the potty. Thin mints slathered in cream cheese frosting will change your mood. Then I’d probably end with my Adam Sandler impression and say, “When you don’t have the words or don’t know what to say, just SHUT UP.”
2. What is a movie you will always stop for if you see it on TV?
Caroline- Father of the Bride, The Parent Trap, The Holiday….basically any Nancy Meyers’ movie. I love them all and even considered naming my twins Annie and Hallie. However, I can’t watch Home Again; she lost her touch with that one.
I will also always stop for Steel Magnolias, and I will always lose my mind during the cemetery scene.
Kat- A League of Their Own. I could probably do a one woman performance of the entire movie, but I love it. I love pretty much all sports movies which is hilarious because I couldn’t care less about sports. I love Tom Hanks. I love sisterhood. I love the era. I used to watch this movie as a child and would proceed to go in the front yard and toss softballs up really high in the air and try to do a split while I caught them. There’s a visual for your Wednesday.
3. What’s a memory that makes you cringe when you think about it?
Caroline-I am full of cringe-worthy stories, but there’s one that stands out in my mind. I was a junior in high school, and we were at an awards banquet one night. There was dinner before the awards, and Miss Ward came up to me before dinner and asked if I would pray before it started. Sure. I can do that. I had a couple of minutes before I needed to go to the front and do this, so I decided to write out my prayer on a napkin. I’m not going to name names…yes I am. Ginny Hudson Power, class of ’02, told me to fold up the napkin and stick it in my pocket while I walked to the podium. I guess this was a good idea so no one would see it and would all believe I was some 16-year old evangelist who could pray beautiful, spirit-filled prayers on the spot. I got up there; I said, “Let us pray,” and then I COULDN’T GET THE NAPKIN OUT! It felt like 3 Star Wars movies played out before I could that crumbled thing out of my khakis. By the time I got the napkin out, I was so flustered I couldn’t even read anything on it. I have no idea what I said, and I don’t think anyone else did either. For all I know, I rattled off my favorite pizza toppings. I finally crawled my way to the word, “amen,” and hung my head
high low and walked back to my seat. I think even the Lord himself was embarrassed.
It made me cringe just typing all of that.
Kat- I shared a pretty cringe worthy moment a few weeks ago, but here we go again. It was my very first day of college. I had two morning classes (I think) then I had gone back to my dorm room for a bit before my next class later in the afternoon. I don’t keep a planner. I don’t write things down. I don’t use a calendar. I can remember. It’s a strategy that has worked for me for 30 years. I have a fantastic memory, and I don’t need to. BUT I am also one to conform at times. All my friends had cute planners and had written down their complete schedules. I’m all about turning over a new leaf and trying something new. College is about “finding yourself”, right? So I had bought a planner and had written down my classes. I wrote the time of my afternoon class down incorrectly. When I realized it, I sprinted across campus to get there.
Now, I had attended a very small private school from the time I was three until eighteen. I graduated with nineteen people. Everybody knew everybody. And I’m from the south. You apologize. I burst into this classroom in the most dramatic of ways and announced, “I’m SO SORRY I’m late!” The teacher said, “Ok. Take a seat.” There were ZERO seats available. I had to sit on the floor mortified and wondering if I should have joined the army.
4. If you could know the absolute truth to one question, what would it be?
Caroline- Disclaimer: I thought of my answer before I had even looked at Kat’s. It’s a wee-bit creepy that our minds were on the same murder track. The VERY first thing that came to my mind when I typed out this question was that I want to know what happed to Caylee Anthony. I am scared of EVERYTHING, but I get so invested in stories like this. It’s been almost 10 years since the trial, but if there’s ever anything about it on TV, I will stop and watch and get completely sucked in to it. I WANT TO KNOW!
Kat- I want to know what happened to JonBenet Ramsey. I remember watching so much of the news coverage and Entertainment Tonight at my grandmother’s house about the case. She was just a year younger than me. (So I probably shouldn’t have been watching) Stuff like this fascinates me. Now, I’m afraid of my own shadow and can’t even watch the Mary Kate and Ashley classic, “Double Double Toil and Trouble” by myself, BUT I want to know what happend to JonBenet.
5. What would the title of your memoir be?
Caroline- Be Quiet. I’m watching Wheel of Fortune
That’s it. That’s my memoir title.
Kat- Oh my goodness. There are so many options. As a running joke whenever someone says something ridiculous about me (which happens more often than you think) I say, “Memoir title.” A few have been:
-John the Baptist and John Deere: Buckling Down in the Bible Belt
-Flawed and Guffaw
-Punting the Sweet Fantastic (if you know what that’s from, you just made a friend for life)
Regardless of the title, the picture below will be the cover.
